Background:
The EMH series program was the creation of Dr. Lewis Zimmerman, developed at the Jupiter research station. However his first program, the Emergency Medical Hologram received many complaints about its seemly cool demeanour and awful bedside manner. He intended the EMH to only be a medical supplement, a simple backup to assist the medical staff in emergencies. It was not meant for long term usage, so Dr Zimmerman never considered giving the EMH much of a personality, thinking it would be mainly interacting with the medical staff. During the Dominion war, the EMH received heavy use to help the overwhelmed medical staff deal with the wounded, pushing it far beyond what Dr. Zimmerman could have ever imagined would be demanded from it. Some people under its care cried they would have received more compassionate treatment from the Jem'Hadar. A few EMH's even failed by all the data they accumulated from being in operation for so long, overloading their holo-matrix.

Despite this, the EMH also showed its worth on more than one occasion. In one such incident, a fatal alien disease found its way onto a starship. Immediately it decimated the ship's small medical staff. However, the EMH upon activation, was able to take steps and combat the infection, and worked tirelessly to keep the rest of the crew alive until help could be reached. The EMH was credited with preventing many further deaths. Armed with all of this information, Dr Zimmerman carefully studied the EMH success and failures, before setting out to vastly improve it, creating the Extended Medical Hologram, or the EMH2.

The USS Galaxy was one of the first ships to receive the upgraded version to their EMH, possibly because half the sickbay staff and crew were all threatening to sabotage the old EMH just to get rid of "MR. GRINCH." Upon installation of the program and hardware, the friendlier EMH2 was much better received in sickbay by staff and patients alike.

The EMH2 superior holo-matrix permitted them to alter the programs characteristics and appearance to fit their needs, or just accept the hologram at its current default settings. However the ships Chief Medical Officer, Doctor Gakor decided to take full advantage of this and set to work to make some tailor changes. She had the EMH2 programmed to be much more sensitive and empathetic to the patients, especially to the children aboard the Galaxy.

The male EMH2 program was soon given the nickname "Doctor Martin" after Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., for no other real reason than that the crew was looking for a name. However, Dr. Gakor soon noticed that the holograms interpersonal sub-routines were too good for a male Doctor, so she decided it would be better received from a female. She had the engineers adjust the 'default' appearance settings of EMH2 holo-matrix altering the physical characteristics of sex, voice and appearance to make "Doctor Martin" a woman. Since the EMH2 has been named after Dr. Martin Luther King, she decided to make her a beautiful African woman with a pleasing, soothing voice.

Personality profile:
The EMH2, unlike the first EMH was designed to naturally interact with the crew but the end result of the crews alterations to the EMH2 program settings could only be described as amazing. Dr. Martin is incredibly charming with a soft and soothing voice. Those who work with her or under her care have to constantly remind themselves that she is not a real person. Nevertheless, some of the crew after meeting her for the first time were quite smitten by the strikingly beautiful holo-doctor.

As a EMH2, she is programmed to show a wide variety of interests to help her interact with the crew, and she does truly enjoys intermingling with others in social events. Often she could be found in Ten-Forward when not performing duties in sickbay.

One interest she has taken a liking to is singing. Something that T-prea had introduced her to. It's not uncommon to hear Dr. Martin either singing or humming a pleasant melody as she works during a slow day in sickbay.

Even as a hologram doctor, she holds the Hippocratic oath of "do no harm" firmly in her beliefs.

Special notes:
The new EMH2, is no ordinary hologram. Dr. Martin is very adaptive to sudden and critical situations. Nevertheless, even with the incredible advances and the complexity of the EMH2, it still has a long way to go before it can come close in replacing a doctor of flesh and blood. One thing that all artificial intelligent systems still lack is the 'imagination' in creative problem solving. If confronted by an unknown and a difficult medical emergency, without any reference material to draw upon the EMH2 and would find itself completely at a lost. An experienced, living and breathing doctor, through trial and error and good old fashion brainstorming could find a diagnosis. The EMH2 is still only meant to be a powerful tool to assist the medical staff and should not be depended upon in handling a medical crisis on its own without human oversight.

Dr. Martin has full control to her activation and deactivation sequence to turn herself ON and OFF. When deactivating herself Dr. Martin can program herself to be turned on within a set time (8:00 AM the next day for example). Only people such as high ranking medical officers and the command staff have the proper authorization and access code to override her activation and deactivation sequence.

She can be 'summoned' by any member of the crew, simply by commanding to the computer to "Activate the Extended Medical Hologram" or "Activate EMH2". Holo-imagers dot all over the ship to permit the EMH2 access to places where the crew routinely gather in large numbers or areas where risk of injuries are high, like engineering, the shuttle bays, bridge, Ten-Forward, recreation faculties, security, etc.

One intent for the Extended Medical Hologram was that it could cover a full medical shift on a regular basis. For example, like the dreaded "midnight watch" for instance, each day, each week, each month, each year. Because of it's projected long term use, it was given better interpersonal sub-routines and a more robust matrix to deal with the additional data extended operation accumulated.

Physically, her holo-matrix can store any one profile of a humanoid life form in it's memory matrix. This allows the crew the ability to reprogram Dr. Martins appearance from time to time if the situation requires it. Like altering her to resemble another alien species to make them feel comfortable so she can examine them. However Dr. Martin has limited control over her holo-matrix to make simple cosmetic changes to her appearance, such as her hair length and style.

Dr. Martin can also control the solidity to her holo-matrix allowing her to become 'ghost-like'. She will look more translucent and objects will pass right through her, but she will not be able to hold onto solid objects.

Beyond performing delicate operations, she is also considerably strong. Strong enough, for instance, to restrain a thrashing Klingon that is going into a seizure, at least long enough to administer a tranquilizer. However, Dr. Martin does not like the use of violence under any circumstances and would rather talk and charm her way out of a bad situation than resort to fighting.
