Things became difficult for the family, however, when the House of Mogh lost it's seat on the council. Kurn was exiled, and many of the house servants - including her mother and father - were executed before the then sixteen year old's eyes. K'emlyr's only saving grace was her own combat skills, which she used to fight off the soldiers of the House of Gowron.
With nowhere left to turn, her Empire in chaos, and her parents dead, K'emlyr saw few options remaining for her. Having been impressed by Lord Kurn's tales of his brother, Commander Worf's adventures in Starfleet, K'emlyr decided to follow suit. She stole a small shuttlecraft from the private hanger bay of Gowron, Chancellor of the High Council, and headed to Earth. From there she made it to Starbase 12, where, upon being apprehended in the stolen shuttlecraft, she told her tale to the Starbase's Chief of Security, Commander Sean Murdock.
Commander Murdock took pity on the young Klingon girl, and, based upon the struggle she'd put up in her apprehension, sponsored her entrance into Starfleet on the Security track. K'emlyr found this acceptable, and passed through the academy without difficulty. She did, however, excel in the areas of hand-to-hand combat, routinely impressing, and even besting, her instructors.
For K'emlyr's first six month tour out of the Academy, she was assigned to the USS Miranda. When that tour was up, she put in for a transfer request to the USS Galaxy. When asked why, the Ensign had merely replied, "Because."
She has routinely frustrated Starfleet Counselours with her no-nonsense attitude and brief answers. She regards them as useless, and does not hesitate to tell them so.
