Mike was the fifth of seven children in the Pailaka family. He was born on Earth in Hawaii while his parents were attending a conference together, but he spent most of his life growing up in the Mokupuni colony on Pacifica. Mike had the blond hair and the striking eyes of his mother, and the bronzed skin and large physical stature of his father. From an early age, he was a friendly, laid back person, who cared deeply for the safety of others but risked his own safety with seeming abandon through a number of dangerous recreational activities, such as cliff diving.
Mike grew bigger and stronger with every passing year, but remained a gentleman at heart. He was an expert pilot, both of sailing vessels and the small atmospheric craft the colonists use to hop from island to island. His ambitions did not extend past getting a university education like his mother and father, and then running a charter service for the thousands of sightseeing tourists that visited Pacifica.
His career path was changed one year, while flying a group of vacationing Starfleet officers around the archipelago. Caught in an unexpected storm, Mike showed skill and poise under extreme pressure, guiding his damaged craft through the eye of the storm and safely back home. Afterwards, a Lieutenant Commander suggested that Mike challenge and hone his skills in Starfleet. Intrigued, Mike went back to the university, took the required courses, and then applied and was accepted to Starfleet Academy.
At the academy, Mike established a reputation as a trustworthy pilot. While not skilled enough in advanced maneuvers to make the cut in Nova Squad, Mike could calculate navigational course corrections in his head. He seemed to have an almost telepathic relationship with starships, from the smallest shuttle to the largest capital ship, noticing each and every sound, vibration and blinking light that might lead to the slightest variation in performance. When not flying, he would spend his time tinkering, adjusting and repairing the ships.
Upon graduation, he requested duty on an exploratory vessel. None were immediately available, so Mike spent a short stint on Starbase 271 as a maintenance tech and backup pilot before landing the opportunity of a lifetime on the USS Galaxy as a Flight Control Officer.
By the end of 2375, Mike had distiguished himself on the crew of the USS Galaxy and earned his first promotion to Lieutenant junior grade. Shortly after, Mike was made Chief Flight Control Officer on board the starship after the presiding Chief Helmsman chose to step down from the position.
In early 2376, Mike was promoted to Full Lieutenant while serving on board the USS Galaxy as Chief Flight Control Officer. Later that same year, Mike had to leave the ship to face some rather serious criminal charges.
At the end of 2377, Mike was reassigned back to the USS Galaxy as a Flight Control Officer. In early 2378 Mike was again promoted back to Full Lieutenant while serving on board the USS Galaxy.
Mike has what some of his friends, family and co-workers have referred to as an underdeveloped sense of fear. He engages in a number of different recreational sports that can be hazardous, and has been known to face down nearly impossible odds with quiet confidence. However, his attitude does a complete flip when he is in charge of protecting the safety of others. He handles his ship and their passengers with the utmost care. It is an attitude that has extended into Mike's relationships with women. Strikingly handsome, he could easily use his physical charms to his advantage. But having been raised around four older sisters, and a mother with an old fashioned sense of values, Mike managed to grow up to be a complete gentleman. He is a romantic at heart, treating his relations with patience and respect. More than one woman has attempted to get Mike to settle down, but he has so far declined the invitations, feeling that a career in Starfleet does not lend itself well to a lifelong commitment.
Mike is skilled in the ancient Hawaiian martial art known as "Lua", literally translated, "the art of life and death". Lua includes many varied techniques, including Mokomoko (boxing and punching), hakihaki (bone-breaking), peku (kicking), aalolo (nerve pressure) and hakoko (wrestling). Lua disciplines also learn related non-combat skills such as ha'a (dance), konane (a strategy game, similar to checkers) and lomilomi (massage). Lua also incorporates a number of traditional weapons techniques.
While Mike, like most Starfleet officers, speaks in Federation Standard, he's been known to toss in a few choice Hawaiian expressions when the situation warrants.
