Heather Marie Sanchez was born in the city of Guadalajara, in the Mexico region of Earth, to parents Jose and Victoria Sanchez. She was raised dual-speaking both English and Spanish, a habit that continues in her speech patterns today. She was one of the ultimate tomboys growing up, playing baseball,taking karate classes and the usual run of tomboy activities. She also made a habit of standing up for the smaller kids, and in fact, in the third grade, beat up the school bully. (An act she repeated in the 4th, 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th and 11th grades). She continued her interest in martial arts and physical activity - particularly marathon running. Heather had a strong desire to protect people from those that would harm others, and it was that desire that led her to Starfleet Academy on the Security track. She excelled in all areas of Security, easily getting through the Academy courses, and gaining a reputation for her no-nonsense attitude and....forthright approach to conflicts. Wise junior cadets steered clear of Heather Sanchez, and indeed, she became something of a minor legend around the Academy. Her senior year, she won the Starfleet Academy marathon. She also became well known as a pool shark, releiving many junior cadets without thier credits.
Her first assignment in Starfleet was to ship out immediately after graduation aboard the Excelsior-Class USS Kilmanjaro, under Captain Aranjuez. The Kilmanjaro was assigned to patrol duty is the Rigel system, so it's security department became well acquainted with the local offices of the Orion Syndicate. In conjunction with Starfleet Intelligence, Sanchez was a member of a team that succeeded in bringing down one of the major syndicate bosses. This success earner her a transfer to the USS Galaxy's Security Department.
After her arrival on the Galaxy, Sanchez continued to be noticed by all around her. Several Ensigns attempted to date her in her first year on the ship, and she rejected all of them. Some, she had to do so forcefully - which was something she had no problem with whatsoever.
In late 2372, Ensign Sanchez was promoted to Lieutenant Junior Grade, as well as receiving a Purple Heart for being shot attempting to recover and escaped prisoner. During this period, she also had the occassion to demonstrate a previously unrealized
In early 2374, Sanchez was promoted to full Lieutenant and made Delta Shift Supervisor in Security. She declined promotion to Asisstant Chief of Security, stating that she "just wanted to be a grunt". She received a commendation for excellence for her involvement in the "Patsy" affair, and received another purple heart in 2377 during a Cardassian attack on Bajor. (See Starfleet Incident File "Stone of Tears"). During her Lieutenant grades, she was frequently partnered with Lieutenant Matthew Albrecht or Lieutenant Elaithin Jii. She also made an effort to ake some of the ship's...less qualified officers under her wing, such as Ensign Peter Lockhart. She continues this tradition with her personal mission of whipping the Tactical Department (or tac-weenies) into shape with daily PT runs. The program is nicknamed "Body By Sanchez" aboard the ship.
In late 2377, Lieutenant Sanchez was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant Commander, and declined promotion to Asisstant Chief of Security once again, for the same reasons as before. She is, for now, content in her place aboard the Galaxy. She is rumored to be involved in a relationship with Lieutenant Commander Elaithin, her Chief of Security, but this is unconfirmed, nor is it considered wise to ask, as the last Ensign who did so found himself srubbing the Galaxy's waste systems with a toothbrush.
