Background:
Mohammed Salassie Uhura, the great grandson of Federation Ambassador and member of the crew of the first Starship Enterprise Nyota Upenda Uhura, was born to Akeem Elijah Uhura and Ashanti Danso in New Johannesburg in the United Continent of Africa on June 28th, 2344. The eldest of three children, Mohammed was raised to be the role model for his younger siblings. Mohammed's father, one of the most respected scientists in Africa, had reverted to using his great grandmother's surname as opposed to using his great grandfather's surname in honor of her. Mohammed had always heard stories of his famous and prominent great-grandmother and his father encouraged and fed his interests with articles and video on her and her life. Mohammed's fascination with his honored great grandmother was only surpassed by his fascination with the environment and environmental science. Mohammed attended the Nelson B. Mandela University where he majored in Environmental Science and achieved a Master's Degree.

It was while he was at Mandela University that he met Tashi Moyenda, a young and very beautiful journalism major. They became very interested in each other and were soon dating and before long they had fallen love. Before long they were married and Tashi was thrilled to be apart of one of the most prominent families in Africa.

While Tashi pursued her journalism career with the Federation New Bureau, Mohammed followed his career as an Environmental Scientist for the New Johannesburg Environmental Institute where he eventually became Assistant Director. Mohammed and Tashi's careers were going well and they had additions to the family, daughter Ayah and son Michael David. It was while he was at the Institute that he became interested in the environments of other planets and the effects those environments had on humans and how the altering of the native environment had on the planetary Ecco system. This prompted him to make a major decision in his life. To enter Starfleet Academy...at 31 years old, one of the oldest cadets at the Academy. His decision to join the Academy did not sit well with the indomitable Akeem. He wanted his son to remain out of Starfleet. He felt that service in Starfleet was beneath such a prominent family, even though it's prominence came from Starfleet. But a determined Mohammed joined and entered Starfleet.

While at the Academy he would meet Chris Reynolds, who would become one of his best friends. It was during a simulation called Red Contact, when Mohammed was named Captain of the mission. It was after he successfully commanded the mission with Chris Reynolds as his Second Officer that the bug of having his own command bit him. After graduating from the Academy he was assigned to the USS Galaxy as an Ensign in the Science Department. Tashi had wanted to come with him but Mohammed couldn't see uprooting his family to join him onboard a starship. So he left them behind as he prepared to see the universe.

Though he was in the science department and enjoying it, the desire to have his own command was encouraged after Captain Robert Edward Lee Price, "The General," used his ingenuity and a daring plan to obey Starfleet's order for him to fire upon another Federation vessel without destroying it thus allowing her to complete her desperate mission to find a cure for the infected crew. This prompted Mohammed to request and receive a transfer from Science to Operations as a departmental head.

Though he is enjoying his new career in Starfleet, he misses his family, especially his wife, who is now pregnant with their third child.

In 2375, during the heat of the Dominion War, Mohammed received a field promotion to the rank of Lieutenant junior grade while serving on board the USS Galaxy. Later that same year, he was promoted to Full Lieutenant and made Assistant Chief Operations Officer of the USS Galaxy.

Personality profile:
Mohammed is a very reflective individual and a deliberate thinker, who is not quick to anger. He comes across as being very wise and is prone to telling old African stories, fables, or poems to make a point or to answer a question, usually to the chagrin and annoyance of the listener. He is in pretty good physical shape.

Special notes:
Being the great-grandson of the renowned and respected Ambassador Nyota Uhura has not been a burden upon him. He wears his pride of his family and the achievements of his most honored and respected family member with understated dignity and humbled awe. He desires to make his own name in Starfleet while doing honor to her and his family.

He is a student of the ancient and now extinct Mobutu African tribe. He tries to incorporate the Mobutu heritage and dress into his everyday life. He wears traditional African garb when off duty. He is very religious though he keeps his religious practices to himself. feeling that one's religious beliefs are as sacred as one's relationship with God.

He has inherited his great-grandmother's love and appreciation of music and has a magnificent singing voice. He plays the trombone, trumpet and guitar but his most favorite instrument is the Vulcan harp and his most prized possession is his great-grandmother's Vulcan harp, which he plays and he alone.

Mohammed is a dedicated family man.
